December is here and that means the holidays are just around the corner! With time off from school and much holiday fun, we have ideas to indulge you and your kiddos in crafty, educational, and engaging activities to keep your children busy and in the holiday spirit.
Everyone has their scrumptious cookie recipes that are often pulled out specially for the holiday season. This is a great activity to get kids involved in. Maybe there is important family history behind your recipes that can be fun to share or it can be a great way to spend time together, teaching them a new skill along the way.
Make a trip to your local library to see the holiday books available. While there are sure to be many books about your own holiday traditions, it can be interesting to seek out books about holidays in other cultures as well. One of my favorite books that that been part of my family traditions since I was a child is Chicken Soup for the Soul: Holiday Treasury for Kids by Jack Canfield. There are numerous stories that are all about the sharing of love, traditions, and giving from the heart.
Homemade Holiday Cards
Spend a cozy, snowy afternoon with hot chocolate and craft supplies making cards. It is a fun activity for kids and is so meaningful to the loved ones receiving the handmade cards. Here are some that my mother and I have made in the past along with a link to directions, but there are so many other ways to get creative with card making as well!
An interactive activity using technology is having kids complete a web search where they learn about holiday traditions around the world. A third-grade teacher shared this resource with me and I loved the questions and the knowledge that can be learned from this web search.
See what events are happening in your community to participate in whether that is being a part of the Holiday parade, volunteering at the soup kitchen or for Salvation Army, supporting local shops, or anything else that may be happening in your town. This can show your kids the importance of community while partaking in interactive holiday events.
